What is the Cruelty-Free Movement?

While it has gained a lot of traction in recent years, the cruelty-free movement is actually more than a hundred years old. The consumers who make up this movement believe that animal testing is both unnecessary and inhumane. They make a stand against any brand or institution that conducts experiments on animals or treats animals in a cruel way.

Nowadays, individuals who want to make sure that the product they are using is cruelty-free have more options. This is because many up-and-coming makeup brands have joined the movement. Even more traditional brands in the beauty industry have started looking into cruelty-free products. Make a stand against animal cruelty while looking great through using skincare and cosmetic products. Here’s some of the things you should remember:

1. Companies have the choice NOT to test on animals.

In many cases, the reason why animal tests persist is because some cosmetic companies insist on developing and using new ingredients in an effort to get ahead of competing brands.

Producing a cruelty-free makeup line is possible. Numerous natural ingredients can be used for makeup, making any form of animal testing unnecessary. Products such as mineral makeup foundations, cocoa butter lipsticks, and bronzers made from plant juices. These products are just some of the examples of organic, cruelty-free options.

2. How to find out if a company or product is truly “Cruelty-Free”.

The only way to be sure that a company has cruelty-free makeup is to purchase products from companies that have a Leaping Bunny and PETA certification. These certifications demand that no new animal testing can be used in any phase of production by the company, its laboratories, or ingredient suppliers.

3. Cruelty-free makeup doesn’t mean they’re also vegan.

There is a lot of confusion around ‘cruelty-free makeup’ as a term, and most people think that vegan and cruelty-free mean the same thing. This isn’t the case. When a makeup product is cruelty-free, it almost always means that the product was not tested on animals. It may, however, still contain animal ingredients.

Veganism is very clear about this part: “Anything that contains animal products is not vegan.” So, while a makeup item may genuinely be cruelty-free, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t contain ingredients that were derived from animals.

4. Animal testing isn’t the only available option for testing products.

Technology has advanced so much in the last decade or two that there are numerous options for us to test products without using animals. An example is testing on lab-grown human skin, which is developed from skin cells donated by willing plastic surgery patients.

According to experts, non-animal tests may even prove to be much cheaper and faster. In fact, we’re almost at the point of using algorithms to predict how certain products can affect a living organism.

5. More companies are jumping on the cruelty-free bandwagon.

The Leaping Bunny certification program certifies more and more companies every year. This is a good indication that the beauty industry is moving away from animal testing and slowly realizing that other testing methods may even benefit them more. Also, as more consumers are also opting to buy cruelty-free products, beauty companies are being forced to rethink their product lines in fear of plummeting sales.

Buy Your Makeup from Ethical Brands

Animal-testing may be an option, but it is an inhumane one. As always, it is up to the consumers to change the direction of where the beauty industry is heading. If more people commit to buying cruelty-free products, then companies will be forced to adjust, as well.
