Advice for Moms

The Featured Mommy – Laci Swann

The Featured Mommy is a series that will run every Monday spotlighting a wonderful mom every week. Make sure to look out for it every week as these moms are here to tell their stories and give you some great advice. If you are interested in being featured, sign up below.

Meet our Featured Mommy of January 15th!

  1. Describe yourself and your blog.

My name is Laci Swann, wife and mother of two – Sloan, 3 (daughter) and Justice, 4 months (son). My blog, www.tinkersandpotpourri.com, is a space that embodies creativity, love, and peace – I write about motherhood and marriage, our travels and lifestyle, and share lots of yummy food posts (I have a vegetarian cookbook releasing in March 2018). I share a range of subjects regarding our lifestyle because we live a semi-unconventional life! My husband is a professional basketball player in Europe, which places us in a new country quite often, yet we live in Florida in the off-season (the summer time). So, I enjoy sharing new foods we try, new places we visit, and how I function as an expat and working mother (I own an editorial company – www.sharpeditorial.com). My hands are full, and so is my heart, and this space allows me to be creative and share our world with others.

  1. What is the best moment you have had as a mom?

The simple moments tug at my heart strings more than anything – when my daughter told me she was so happy after her third birthday party (a simple pizza party with a few friends, which truly reminded me how happy kids are with the simple pleasures). Another wonderful moment was our Christmas photo session. The session itself was lovely, but a fond memory comes to mind when I think about our baby boy, Justice, having a giggle fit with my husband… and the photographer captured some of those moments for us.

  1. Advice you can give to other moms.

Trust your instincts. Shy away from the pressures of society to be, what others deem, a suitable mother. You have all the tools to be a fantastic parent. Let your heart and mind guide you… and a little help from your trusted tribe won’t hurt, either 🙂

  1. What is the scariest part about being a mom?

When situations are completely out of my control, especially when our kids get sick. Sickness is inevitable, but to watch your baby fight a cold, as trivial as that may sound, is difficult, because there is only so much we can do as parents. Small kids, small problems. Consequently, big kids, bigger problems, and I know our battles will magnify as our babies grow older.

  1. Tell us a story about motherhood:

Our children watch our every single move. Not only do they watch, but they are parrot-like in the way they mimic our words and choices, too. One day, a few months ago, actually, I was watching my daughter play with her blocks. She was building a tower, then having her stuffed dolls climb up the tower. Her doll “fell off” the tower and I heard my daughter say, “Oh, no! Be careful, but have fun, okay?” I laughed to myself because I say those exact words to my daughter on the playground as she aggressively climbs and swings and falls down, too. We are our kids’ best examples, and in a moment like that, I realized the importance of choosing my words wisely and how precious motherhood is to not only my children but posterity in general. We make a difference!

  1. Anything you would like to add?

In addition to owning an editorial company, I created a children’s book series, “Sloan Saves the Day.” The first book “Sharing is Caring” is available on Amazon. I would love for my fellow mamas to check it out! J
