4 Tips to Updating Your Home Decor

Has your dog devastated your couch? Or are you still sleeping on that same lumpy futon you’ve had since college? Or maybe you’re just tired of your home’s décor and you’re ready for a change? Whether you are looking to achieve a stylish modern new look or have your eye on an elegant and unique antique sofa, sometimes you just have to say, “Out with the old and in with the new”!

When it comes to updating your home decor, there are several ways to get the job done. Whether you are looking to give your space a bit of a facelift on a tight budget or you want to go all out on a total overhaul, replacing your old stuff with new pieces that you love is a great way to make your house feel a bit more like home. Here are a few of our favorite home decor tips.

Replacing your old stuff with new pieces that you love is a great way to feel a bit more like home. Here are a few of our favorite home decor tips.

Start with Furniture First

You may think that choosing a new paint color is a good first step, but that isn’t necessarily true. As you know, painting is a whole lot of work. It involves moving everything out of or into the center of the room, covering the floor, buying painting supplies, buying paint (which isn’t cheap), and dedicating an afternoon to manual labor.

Once the job is done, you have the perfect color. Or so you think. You head to the furniture store and cannot find a single piece that matches that perfect piece. Or you find a sofa you absolutely love, but it doesn’t go with the wall color you thought you loved. Save yourself a lot of frustration by shopping for your new furniture first.

It’s far easier to find paint that matches your beautiful new sofa than it is to find the perfect sofa to match your paint. Also, keep in mind that your new furniture will likely be one of the largest purchases you make when you redecorate your home. Since it will probably be the most expensive thing you buy, it only makes sense to purchase it first and design the rest of your home around it.

Splurge on Things That Are Important

Redecorating your home can be expensive, and it is important to know when to splurge. In most cases, your best bet is to replace damaged or non-functional items before you start worrying about the smaller stuff. Get those big, important things out of the way first. If, for example, your bed is propped up on one end by books, repainting your walls shouldn’t be a top priority. Get rid of that old bed and buy a new one! Big purchases are scary, but having your bed suddenly tilt and roll you right out of it at 3 a.m.is scarier.

When someone walks into your home, the first thing they are going to see is that broken bed frame, holy couch, or wobbly kitchen table. They aren’t going to even notice that lovely oak shelf you just bought or the perfect potted plant in the corner. Splurge on fixing problems before you spend money on unnecessary upgrades.

Accessorize

When you want to give your home a makeover and make it feel more like your own, you need the right accessories. Get rid of the random knickknacks that are just gathering dust, and replace them with accessories that suit your taste. Decorative bowls and trays, wall art, mirrors, candles, and books are great for accessorizing just about any room in your home. In the living room and bedroom, use throw pillows and blankets to create a soft, inviting feel.

Because the right accessories can completely transform a space, they are a great option when you are trying to spruce up a space on a budget. When carefully chosen, a few nice pieces can change the entire look and feel of any room.

Choose Colors Carefully

When updating your home décor, choosing the right colors is important. Light colors tend to make spaces look larger, while darker ones make them look smaller. If you are decorating a tiny home or a small bedroom, using light colors is a good way to make the space feel less claustrophobic. If you are trying to make a large living room feel a bit cozier, though, darker colors may be the way to go.

Our great home decor tips is that it’s important to choose colors that coordinate, but they don’t need to match exactly. If you are decorating your living room in blue, for example, feel free to use all shades of the color. This is much more visually appealing than using just one shade, and it allows you to mix and match to create a space that is truly your own.

If you are nervous about using color as a major design element, there is nothing wrong with sticking with neutrals when shopping for furniture and paint. Add color in less-permanent ways by pairing brightly colored pillows with your beige couch or buying a vibrant rug. Also, keep in mind that minimalism is a huge design trend right now. Sticking with light neutrals for the entire space can have as much of an impact as using bright colors!

Conclusion

With a little bit of determination and creativity, any room in your home can look like it’s been pulled out of a designer magazine! If your space is feeling a bit outdated or you have furniture pieces that are falling apart, these home decor tips help you! Getting rid of the old stuff and investing in new pieces is a great way to make your “home sweet home” feel a little bit homier.
