Why Families Should Really Consider A Whole House Water Filter

It’s probably a safe bet that you’ve seen an increase in troubling news stories about contamination in public water supplies around the country. One instance that may come to mind is Flint, Michigan which infamously had acidic water that leached lead from pipes and may have exposed thousands of children to neurotoxic levels of lead. But it doesn’t stop there. It actually starts with chlorine.

Many municipalities add chlorine to the public water supply to kill off bacteria. That sounds like a good thing and in some ways, it is. However, some studies have linked high levels of chlorine in water, and the by-products produced (THMs), to cancer and heart disease later in life.

“One common factor among women with breast cancer is that they all have 50-60% higher levels of these chlorination by-products (THMs) in their fat tissue than women without breast cancer…”

Drinking water

While drinking water is one concern, some experts worry more about topical chlorine exposure. Some examples such as by taking warm showers or baths that open up pores and allow chlorine to enter from the water. It is important to make sure that you have secure water to drink at home.

According to the American Journal of Public Health, “up to 2/3 of the harmful effects of chlorine is due to inhalation and skin absorption while showering.”

Think about all the time our little ones sit in the bath and can be absorbing these contaminants. If that was all, then many good whole house water filtration systems would be the answer. But it has become more complicated lately as more and more municipalities are using a new disinfectant in addition or to replace chlorine. It’s referred to as Chloramines.

Chloramine

Chloramine is the chemical product of chlorine combined with ammonia. (You can read more about chloramines here) Evidence is mounting about the many health risks chloramine poses —something that shouldn’t be surprising when you know that ammonia forms a large part of the compound. According to Citizens Concerned About Chloramine (CCAC), chloramine can have a negative impact on the:

  • Immune system
  • Respiratory system
  • Skin
  • Digestive tract
  • Kidneys
  • Blood

Here’s the big problem. There have been no solutions on the market to safely, effectively, and affordably remove chloramine from household water. Most filters used to remove chlorine cannot effectively remove chloramines.

House Water Filter

That’s one reason why WAVE Home Solutions developed the City Supreme whole house water filter. This whole-home system offers the highest possible reduction of chlorine, chloramine, chemicals, toxins, lead, and sediment so the water is safe to use.  Here are some great features with WAVE Home Solutions’ City Supreme.

Filtration contact time with the water and its surface area are extremely important for effective filtration. The carbon in the City Supreme has more than double the surface area compared to other leading carbon filters on the market. As far as we know, the City Supreme has the only carbon filter that can be regenerated on site. Put in a small packet and run the backwash every 6 months and it’s as if you have a brand-new system.

One of the top filters on the market which is rated to remove more than 500,00 gallons of chlorinated water. It is only rated to handle 7,000 gallons of water that uses chloramines. But since WAVE’s carbon has the increased surface area and can regenerate on site, it can last 10+ years. The City Supreme’s carbon is enhanced so it can remove additional contaminants effectively, such as arsenic & fluoride, which other carbon filters cannot.
