Walking your dog is a necessity to keep them happy and healthy. However, you shouldn’t see it as a chore. Instead, you should see it as time spent bonding with your furry companion and getting physical activity into your daily routine. Dogs also make great training partners if you’re exercising outdoors.
To make the most of your dog walks, you’ll need to invest in a number of essentials to keep both you and your dog safe, warm, and comfortable. Below, we’ve listed some of the essentials that everybody needs to purchase for dog walking.
A Good-Quality Leash
A good dog leash prevents your dog from running away and enables you to keep control of them as you’re walking down busy roads. A sturdy leash should fit your dog’s neck well. It shouldn’t be so tight that it restricts their movement or breathing or is loose to the point where your dog can easily escape if they want to.
For smaller dogs, a lightweight leash might suffice. However, for larger dogs, you will need a thicker, stronger leash to stay in control of them during your daily walks. Consider getting a retractable leash that you can extend and shorten as and when needed to respond to various situations.
Comfortable Boots for You and Your Dog
Long walks can take a toll on your feet if you don’t have the right footwear. You’ll need a pair of sturdy, durable, and weather-resistant shoes for your dog walks, ideally a pair made from high-quality leather or a synthetic equivalent.
Ideally, you should choose dog boots for hiking that provide support for your feet and ankles to reduce the risk of injuries and make it easier to walk on uneven terrains. They should also have great arch support to improve your gait and posture as you walk.
You must also think about your pup’s paws, too. Dogs’ paws are sensitive, and getting your furry friend a pair of thick boots will protect their paws from the elements. They will also prevent sharp objects from cutting your dog’s paws and causing injuries.
A Water Bottle and Dog Bowl
Hydration is important for you and your dog. If you’re taking long hikes, especially on hot summer days, you will need to pack a water bottle for yourself and a water bowl for your dog into your bag.
When you’re on extended walks, you can take regular stops along your journey to rest and rehydrate before continuing your walk. Doing so ensures you and your dog stay as healthy and safe as possible and makes your walks more enjoyable.
Choose a lightweight bottle and dog bowl to prevent fatiguing yourself as you’re walking. Having portable rehydration equipment also makes it easier for you and your dog to have quick, refreshing breaks during longer walks without needing to stop for several minutes every time you want a sip of water.
