Homework is Hard! Tips to Encourage Your Child

As a parent, one of the biggest battles can be getting your child to do their homework. A necessity in many cases, homework helps children to learn and broaden their knowledge. Yet after a day of learning at school or at home, it can be the last thing they feel like doing. Which is where your encouragement and help is vital.

Setting a good influence and routine can really help them to keep on top of things and not become overwhelmed. Your child shouldn’t get too much work that is not doable, so keep this in mind if you decide to create a schedule for them. If you are facing a constant battle of getting your little one to do their work outside of school hours, we have put together some top tips that should make it that little bit easier.

If you are facing a constant battle of getting your little one to do homework , here's some tips to encourage your child!

Create a schedule for them

One of the best things you can do when encouraging your child to do their homework is to create a schedule. This will mean they know clearly what they have to do and when and have reasonable deadlines to stick to. You should factor in time for them to come in, have a snack and a drink, then do their tasks and what time they should finish. You also need to add in downtime so that once they reach a certain time they will stop and relax and be able to enjoy their evenings. This is vital for them to not become burnt out and will give them the incentive to finish what they’re working on.

Offer rewards

There is nothing like a reward to incentivize your child to get their work done. Depending on their age, you could create a reward chart with stickers that they get when they finish a certain piece. Once they get several stickers that you specify, they can choose a prize or a present. It could be something such as a bag of sweets, a day trip out or some pocket money. No matter what it is, sit down with your child and explain they will get treated for doing their work. This is a great way to teach them responsibility too and they’ll learn that doing work gets rewards – such as in the real world when you get paid for jobs.

Sit down and help them with it

Homework isn’t always easy, so if you sit down with them it can greatly help them get it finished and also be a valuable bonding tool for you to have with your child. Sit down and talk them through their work, helping where you can but being sure not to take over. They need to learn to work things out on their own and won’t benefit if you do it for them – no matter how tempting it might be sometimes! You could use things such as learning videos – check here for more info – which can give lessons in a fun and informative way.

Encourage them to work with their friends

If your child is a little bit older, it can be a real benefit to have them do work with their friends. They have all been in the lessons together and as such can help each other out. Do keep an eye on them though and make sure they’re actually working and not just chatting and messing around! This is a great way for them to bond with their friends too and learn more about collaboration and working as a team.

Make sure they have plenty of downtime

As well as working, downtime is vital for a child or they will end up being burnt out and unable to work to the best of their ability. Factor in time for them to just be themselves and do what they enjoy. It could be that they play on their console, go outside in the garden, or watch TV – it’s up to you.

These are just a few top tips that can help to encourage your child to do their homework. The earlier they get into a good routine, the better it is for them as they get older. By encouraging them to get it all done once they have finished their school day, before doing anything else, means that it can be out of the way and they can have the rest of the evening to relax.
