How to Keep a Long-Distance Relationship Alive

Relationships are tough enough to handle, and when you are apart from your partner, it takes things to a whole new level. Having your partner in the same physical space allows you both to give each other emotional support, and many people are justifiably afraid that “out of sight, out of mind” applies to their long-distance relationship. If you and your partner are currently in separate locations, here are a few tips on how to keep the relationship on an even keel.

Make the Best Use of Available Technology –

While many of us take technology for granted, it can certainly help you to keep your relationship strong. Skype calls are free and all you need is to arrange a suitable time that works for both of you and try to spend at least 30 minutes with a video call. If the time zones cause an issue, then you should compromise and try to fit in with your partner’s schedule. If you are planning on popping the question when you finally are together, check out the diamond rings in Sydney on offer at Certified Diamond Network, who happen to be one of Australia’s leading online diamond merchants.

Do Things Together –

Even though you can only be virtually together, you can do things together during your video conference calls, such as singing along to your favourite songs or discuss a movie that you have both seen. Ask about their day, but try not to be too inquisitive. It is also a good idea to talk about the future and remind each other that this situation is temporary and you will soon be together. There are some more great tips on how best to survive a long-distance relationship which you can refer to.

Set Ground Rules –

This is important, and you should both compile a list of things that you feel should be guidelines for the forced separation. Is it OK, for example, for your partner to go out on dates, and how would they feel if you spent some time with an opposite sex friend? Ideally, this should be done prior to the separation, which will help you both to understand each other better. Be realistic and it isn’t wise to put too many restrictions on a person, as this might have the opposite effect.

Make the Effort to Meet –

Even if you are on the other side of the world, you shouldn’t be apart for too long. Weeks soon turn into months, which then become years. If, for example, your partner is posted abroad, work out some time that you could perhaps visit, even if it is only for a few days. This will strengthen the relationship and your partner will be in no doubt as to how you feel about them if you have gone out of your way to make the trip.

While it can be very stressful for a relationship if both are apart for a long period of time, all of the above should ensure that the spark remains and before you know it, you will be together and can put your plans into operation.
