5 Effective Ways to Protect Your Child’s Hearing

As a parent, it’s important to be mindful of your child’s hearing, and to teach them to do the same. Frequent exposure to loud noise can have a negative impact on their hearing. Your child could be exposed to high volumes in a number of common situations. These can include loud music, festivals, traffic, sporting events, and even movies. Fortunately, there are plenty of types of hearing protection specially designed for children, and even babies. There are also a few things you can do to protect your child’s hearing.

As a parent, it’s important to be mindful of your child’s hearing, and to teach them to do the same. Here's what to do:

Turn the volume down

Find out what levels of volume can damage your hearing, and ensure your child isn’t exposed to these frequently. Use parental controls on their devices to set the volume at a maximum level. Explain to them while you’re doing so and encourage them to develop healthy habits. If your child does any sports or activities where they are exposed to loud noise you could consider getting them hearing protection such as ear plugs.

Teach them to be mindful of their senses

Teach your child to be mindful of their senses. There are certain activities you can try, such as forest bathing. Take a walk into a peaceful natural area, for example, a wood or forest. Encourage your child to focus on the sights, sounds, and smells around them. There are several benefits of forest bathing for kids. It’s a sensory and stress-relieving experience. It also helps them gain perspective.

Research types of ear protection

Research different types of ear protection according to the age and lifestyle of your children. You can invest in noise-cancelling headphones for kids, and there are even ones designed for babies. Infants and young children have particularly sensitive eardrums and that’s why ear protection specifically made for them is recommended. These are smaller in size and more comfortable for little ears. With a better fit, you can rest assured your children’s hearing is protected.

Set a good example

Trying to teach your child good habits is one of the most challenging of parenting problems. The best thing to do is lead by example. Children will often adopt the habits and behaviors they see modeled by their parents. You can’t expect your child to turn the volume down on their devices if you listen to music at full blast in the car, for example. Be mindful of your hearing and this will help influence your children to do the same.

Speak to an audiologist

If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing, speak to an audiologist for peace of mind. You could even take them for a hearing test. Hearing tests are recommended in younger children anyway to ensure healthy development, and to look out for any issues. An audiologist will also be able to recommend any suitable solutions for any issues relating to the ear, even if your child simply has a build-up of wax. They will also provide you with more tips and advice on how to protect your child’s hearing.
