New Year, New Therapist: Why Therapy is Good for You

Choosing to start therapy is a huge step for many people. In fact, most people spend their time on the fence thinking about therapy rather than actually looking for a therapist and booking a session. Starting that initial first step is nerve wracking and it can feel very overwhelming, because deciding to rely on somebody else to support you and to talk you through your fears is not the easiest thing to do.

Whether you choose to go with a therapist such as ACTion Psychotherapy individual therapy or it’s relationship therapy you need with your partner, therapy has a place in everybody’s life even if they don’t necessarily have identified issues. Prevention is always better than a cure, and talking through difficult situations in life that haven’t necessarily made you depressed or traumatized you before they get to that stage is always a smart choice.

2023 looms ahead of us right now, and we should be looking at ways that we can improve our lives. A new year often offers a smart new clean page to rely on to write a new chapter of your story. What if this year, your chapter could be about going to therapy and seeking help?

What if it could be all about asking the right questions and gaining clarity into areas of your life that seem murky right now? There are so many reasons you should go ahead and go to therapy, but we’ve got some of those reasons below to hopefully convince you that it’s the best idea.

There are so many reasons you should go ahead and go to therapy, but we've got some of those reasons below to hopefully convince you that it's the best idea.

It’s been recommended to you.

If somebody close to you has told you that it might be a smart idea to go and seek the help of a therapist, you should listen. They clearly know you well enough to know that you need more support and better help. It also may be a good way to stop leaning too heavily on your friends so much and allow them to be able to lean back on you.

Therapy is a good step to take if it’s been recommended to you before, because those who recommended are keeping your best interests in mind and are concerned about your well being. They know who you are on the inside and they want you to be the best version of you that you can be.

You’ve been feeling out of control lately.

Sometimes if you’re standing in the eye of a hurricane you feel at peace. The trouble is that the eye of a hurricane is the most peaceful area because it’s the world around it that’s moving, shaking and spinning. If life is whirling around you right now, and you are feeling out of control you need to be able to bounce off of somebody else and ask them what you can do to gain back that control. Therapists can walk you through situations that are happening to you in real time and help you to come to terms with them and understand why things happen the way they do.

Life just doesn’t feel right right now.

You can’t put your finger on it. There’s been no tragedy or trauma or huge meltdown. There’s been no shift in your relationships. You just feel like things aren’t right but you need to be able to talk to somebody about that without feeling crazy and therapists can help. They can work with you to pinpoint what’s going on and what you are feeling and then help you to unravel the confusion you are feeling so that you can finally feel more at peace.

Life sucks.

Having a therapist can help you to manage when life really does suck. Significant life events, even the amazing ones, can affect you, and being able to talk about your feelings and how you are acting with them is going to help you to be a better person going forward. Sometimes you just need additional support and a therapist is there to give you that support.

You want somebody to confide in.

If you’re not feeling connected to yourself or to the world around you, you need somebody that can confide in you. Therapy offers you a time slot every week to just let your voice be heard and be the one in charge. Sometimes, you need somebody who understands how to help you to do that and that’s exactly what your therapist could do.

The strongest people out there need somebody to lean on, so don’t be left in the dark when you could get some help right now.
