4 Early Stage Eye Diseases And Treatment Options

We’ve been living an incredibly fast-paced lifestyle and the long working hours may be taking a toll on our eyes. We generally tend to ignore certain signs that may lead to conditions that require time and money to treat. This is where a yearly eye exam can help you in detecting any eye problems at an early stage.

Blurry vision is a common presentation of a wide variety of conditions. It starts with the surface of the eye, called the cornea, which is our largest refractive surface. This is where a majority of the blurry vision lies. As a result of conditions such as nearsightedness, an inability to see far, far-sightedness which is the opposite and astigmatism which is the irregularity of the surface of the cornea. These conditions can easily be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. In addition to this, there are certain pathological conditions of the cornea that could cause blurry vision such as infections in patients who are contact lens users or certain genetic conditions such as corneal dystrophies.

There are various stages of eye diseases and various treatment options are available for each type.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin protective layer that covers the surface of the eyeball and inner surface of the eyelids. Children often suffer from conjunctivitis, since it is highly contagious and easily spreads in schools.

Although it is a minor eye infection, it can develop into something more serious if not treated in time. In some cases, when conjunctivitis has been on the eye for some time, it can leave some spots on the cornea that is a result of a dying virus. In rare situations, these spots can remain at the center of the eye and cause blurry vision.

How to Treat It?

You really do not have to worry about conjunctivitis unless it is contagious. However, eye drops are essential, so make sure you visit an edina eye care center (if that is where you live) and get the right kind of medication prescribed to you. You would also be advised to clean your eyelids with a wet cloth and apply warm or cold compresses several times a day. It’s also better to avoid wearing contact lenses during your recovery period because you don’t want to aggravate the condition.

Diabetic Eye Disease

A diabetic eye disease can result from having type 1 or type 2 diabetes. There may be no symptoms, but if you have pre–existing diabetes, you may want to get a comprehensive eye exam done as soon as you can. Patients may experience blurry vision when high glucose intake changes fluid levels or cause swelling in the tissues of the eyes. Early detection and treatment can minimize your risk of permanent vision loss.

How to Treat It?

  • Medical Control

It comes as no surprise that your sugar intake has to be controlled as it might just help you get your vision back. Sugar control regulates your blood pressure, keeping your blood vessels healthy. Moreover, ensure that you take the medicines prescribed to you by your doctor.

  • Laser Surgery

A laser can help reduce the swelling in the retina, shrink blood vessels and prevent them from growing again.  Don’t panic if you require more than one treatment.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma has been known as the silent thief of sight. It builds up pressure within the eye and causes damage to the optic nerve. Those above the age of 40 or who have a thyroid problem can experience this condition. In some patients, the drainage angle of the eye shrinks and becomes completely blocked that leads to blurry vision.

How to Treat It?

Glaucoma can be treated in multiple ways that include eye drops, laser surgery or a combination of these.

If you’ve been prescribed eye drops, do tell your doctor about other medications you may be taking. Close your eyes for 2 minutes to let the eye drops absorb well into your eyes. You may feel uneasy at first, but the burning sensation will only last a while.

  • Laser Surgery

Another way to treat it is it’s an increasingly popular treatment option and there are different laser surgeries available to treat the different types of glaucoma.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

It’s one of the leading causes of vision loss where your retina is damaged. The fine details of something near or far are missed. AMD is of two types, namely dry and wet. If you consume a diet high in meat and dairy products, smoke cigarettes and are 50 and above or have a family history of AMD, your chances of having AMD are much higher. In later stages of AMD, as the disease progresses, patients may experience blurry vision which may worsen over time.

How to Treat It?

Next, there are no treatment options available for Dry AMD, but vision aids can be provided to help you see better. Wet AMD requires regular eye injections and may involve a light treatment called “photodynamic therapy” to prevent your vision from getting worse.

Finally, with all the treatment options available, it is also important to visit an eye specialist for early detection of any condition. This will save you from misery and help you maintain healthy eyes and keep blurry vision away.
