If you have a school age child, then you know that getting them to go to sleep at a good time at night is difficult! No matter the day, it can be a challenge. So, what do you do when it is a school night and they are wide awake? We know the feeling and it can be really frustrating as a parent and make you feel helpless. But we have some tips for you in order to help get your school age kids to sleep every night.

Have a routine and stick to it!
Another great tip for helping your school age child get to sleep is to make sure to have a routine! Routine is so key for all ages of children that it is important to find one that works for you and stick with it. Once you start leaving the routine up to your kids is where the later the bedtime comes in and the less time you have to yourself at night. Our routine that we have been able to stick with is as follows:
Get a sound machine
A great way to help promote sleep is to provide a sleep sound machine. There are so many out there now that it is easy to find. Find one that is easy to transport with you in case you do travel because once they get use to sleeping with sounds, it is hard to stop! But, it can really be helpful if your child likes to know what everyone is doing when they are trying to go to sleep and can hear the TV. Sleep sound machines and air purifiers are a great way to help with the calming sounds to promote sleepiness. My daughter uses both of them at the same time. The sound machine is on a timer and instead of a fan for noise, we use an air purifier so it is making the air in her room clean, instead of with a fan pushing around dust.
Lose the iPad an hour before bedtime
One of the biggest things that we battle as parents is using technology before bed. Bluelight can really be detrimental to sleep for kids, it prolongs the ability to fall asleep. Especially if they are watching something really active and engaging, they tend to want to keep watching it, pushing off the natural melatonin that their body is trying to make. This would be a good time to enter in reading a book into your routine so that way kids are not looking at their iPads or cell phones before going to sleep and are accessing the natural melatonin that their body is producing.
