4 Questions to Ask at Your Postpartum Appointment

Whether this is your first child or maybe it’s your fifth there’s no such thing as cut and dry when it comes to parenting. Being a parent can feel like a balancing act at times. It’s perfectly normal to over think certain things, especially if this is your first child.  Your first doctor’s appointment post baby is a great opportunity for you to lay all your questions out on the table.

Don’t hesitate to ask what you may think sounds foolish or feel like there’s no way anyone else could have this type of question.  This appointment is the perfect opportunity for you and your spouse to pick your doctors brain about all the new things your baby is teaching you about your body and each other. Below are a few answers to the some common questions you may find yourself asking at your six-week postpartum appointment.

When is it safe to have sex?

Although you may not want to have another baby anytime soon, it’s normal to miss intimacy during those first few weeks of your child’s life.  The want to have sex, while not always the same for all couples, is a great feeling to have.  After all, not only can sex feel great, but engaging in sex can actually boost your health. However, if you are finding that shifts in hormones combined with lack of sleep and soreness is leaving you less than thrilled about getting back into the swing of things in the bedroom, you’re not alone!  You and your partner will get back into the groove but if you want a little extra help, consider speaking to your doctor about ways in which you can boost your libido postpartum.

 

When can I start taking birth control?

Obviously consulting a professional is the safest way to decide which type of birth control is right for you.  It is also important to set up what your family goals are.  If you have plans to grow your family sooner than later, you may want to hold off on birth control.  You and your partner can talk this over with your doctor and devise a plan. Most doctors recommend abstinence for the first six weeks after giving birth.  This is especially necessary if you’re breastfeeding so you do not interfere with your milk supply. The options are endless when it comes to birth control and together with your doctor you can tailor a plan that fits your needs.     

  

 

Am I too emotional?

With your hormones all out of whack, it should come as no surprise that crying at the drop of a hat may become part of your daily routine.  Sure, having a baby is a super happy occasion, but there are many other emotions you’ll be feeling that no one warns you about.  The important thing is, don’t keep your postpartum feelings to yourself.  It’s crucial you talk with someone you trust, like your partner, or maybe even someone who’s been there before.  However, if you find yourself feeling anxious, depressed, or unable to do day-to-day tasks, it’s important to consult your doctor immediately.

Is it okay to exercise?

For some new moms, getting back into shape is top priority.  While this is a great goal to set, it’s important to consult with your doctor before jumping back into a fitness routine.  If you were exercising during your pregnancy, it’s safe to do some walking and light upper body exercise as soon as you feel up to it.  However, exercising after a C-Section is a bit different.  If you get the okay from your doctor, consider exercising with your partner to keep one another motivated. This will help you both stay accountable and allow you to spend time together which is close to impossible with a new baby!  With all this said, keep in mind that your new body is one you should embrace and remember that everyone’s journey is unique!


While the types of questions asked at a postpartum appointment may vary depending on the individual, the importance of asking these types of questions .  You should never feel unintelligent for asking even what may seem like the silliest of questions, because if you don’t ask, you’ll never know!  Chances are if you’re curious about something, someone else out there is as well!  Considering that you’re already at the appointment, what better time to ask?  Being a parent comes with its fair share of obstacles and it’s pretty likely you’ll struggle from time to time. With the right amount of patience and perseverance, you can overcome those struggles and be the best example possible for your children.
