One of the best things about the holiday season is the great food involved. However, this does mean that it is not rare for us to put on a bit of weight and generally not feel as healthy as a result. The main priority is definitely to have fun and to enjoy seeing all of your loved ones, but if you are looking to keep up your healthy eating habits this holiday season, then there are definitely ways to do that effectively too.
Keep Your Breakfasts Healthy
Breakfast is undoubtedly one of the most important meals of the day as it kick-starts your daily activities and will act as your fuel for the rest of the time you are functioning until your next meal. A good breakfast is a sign that you will have a good day, so it is worth investing a bit of time into making them substantial and balanced. If you are struggling to think about what kind of things you should make, here are some excellent high protein breakfast ideas that will definitely sustain you, no matter what your plans for the day may be.
If you have a healthy and fulfilling breakfast, it is less likely that you will feel the urge to eat unnecessarily throughout the day. Rather, you will only consume what you need.
Don’t Snack Between Meals
One of the things that catches you out the most is not actually the meals themselves, but the snacking in between them. One rule that you could make for yourself so that you are able to still enjoy the holiday season and the food involved is that you are allowed to eat the meals without rationing yourself, so long as you do not snack in between them. This could be a really effective compromise to make, as it will not limit you entirely, and it will still allow you to enjoy the main components of the meal.
Trying to cut out snacking habits more generally is a good tendency to try and adopt, since it will make sure that your meals are nutritious and filling in order to sustain you sufficiently until the next one. If you do absolutely need a snack, try and go for things like carrot or celery rather than candy or crisps.
Keep Your Portion Sizes Reasonable
If you try and monitor your portion sizes, this is a great way to still enjoy all of the delicious food that the festive season may bring, without feeling as though you have been over indulgent. You do not necessarily have to cut things out completely – rather, cutting down on them can be a really good compromise. A good way to do this is by buying a plate or a bowl that holds a sufficient amount of food, which you can use regularly for your meals.
Having said this, it is really important not to get over-obsessive when limiting yourself. After all, food is energy for our bodies and it is essential that you fuel your body well or it won’t be able to cope, so don’t be too strict when limiting yourself.
The holiday season is very food oriented, so it is definitely no fun being on a diet while other people take this time to indulge on their favorite things to eat. To stop yourself from having fun is definitely not the answer, since this will probably make you resent your diet. Instead, you should try and make a conscious effort to work around it to the best of your ability, finding ways you can still eat great food and simultaneously not be reckless with your eating habits.
